Artist: Eugene Friesen
Eugene Friesen, four-time Grammy winner, is active internationally as a cellist, composer, conductor and teacher. He has performed and recorded with such diverse artists as Dave Brubeck, Toots Thielemans, Betty Buckley, Will Ackerman, Joe Lovano and Dream Theater, and appears regularly with Trio Globo and with the Paul Winter Consort. A love for children and music education led Eugene to create his popular program for young audiences titled CelloMan. A pioneer in the teaching of improvisation to classically trained musicians, Eugene has led workshops throughout the world and is the author of Improvisations for Classical Musicians.
He has performed as a soloist at the International Cello Festival in Manchester, England; Rencontres d’Ensembles de Violoncelles in Beauvais, France; the World Cello Congress in Baltimore, Maryland; and the Rio International Cello Encounter in Rio de Janeiro. His recording credits include five albums of original music: New Friend, Arms Around You, The Song of Rivers, In the Shade of Angels and Sono Miho. More recent recordings include Colorful Transitions, a collection of jazz, Brazilian and originals with Lyle Lovett’s pianist Tim Ray; Trio Globo’s Steering By the Stars; and Love Songs of the Americas, a collection of songs in Spanish, Portuguese and English featuring Mexican vocalist Mili Bermejo and the Berklee World Strings.
