GRAMMY award-winning multi-percussionist Joseph Gramley performs internationally as a soloist, chamber musician, educator, producer, concert host and with major symphony orchestras. Called “brilliant” by the New York Times, Gramley has released two solo recordings, eight albums as a founding member of the Silkroad Ensemble and served as the group’s Associate Artistic Director with Yo-Yo Ma. He is a professor at the University of Michigan and was awarded the university’s top honor: The Stanley Medal. Gramley was named a Presidential Scholar in the Arts in 1988 and received his master’s degree from Juilliard in 1995.
Silkroad’s residencies at Lame Deer Junior High, on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation in Montana began as one of the inaugural Turnaround Arts-sponsored programs. When Silkroad musicians, led by Kojiro Umezaki and Cristina Pato, wrapped their first visit, they immediately wanted to come back.
