Founded ten years ago by conductor Andrew Cyr, Metropolis Ensemble has grown to be an invaluable supporter of up-and-coming composers and performers of contemporary music. I have been fortunate enough to work with them on a number of occasions, and I feel that it's important to recognize the support they offer artists for their most ambitious projects – support that might not be available anywhere else. An example of this support is the recent launch of Metropolis's first pop-up venue in New York City at 1 Rivington. Since opening in early 2017, they have presented more than 20 shows, ranging from live improvisation with animation, to singer-songwriter sets, to interactive Shakespeare productions. The space offers much versatility and often includes collaborations with their downstairs neighbor, the art gallery On Stellar Rays. I look forward to seeing Metropolis grow beyond their tenth anniversary season, and I hope that they become a model for new music organizations that support and challenge artists and audiences alike.
An active composer and performer, Molly Joyce’s music has been described as "impassioned" (The Washington Post) and written to "superb effect" (The Wire). Her work can be heard on New Amsterdam Records and has been featured in outlets such as Pitchfork, Paste Magazine, and I Care If You Listen.
