Nate Zeisler, Dean for Community Initiatives at the Colburn School in Los Angeles, envisions a world where students majoring in the arts have a clear path to a sustainable career, where creative minds are empowered and inspired to rule the workforce, and where access to the arts is not just for the privileged few, but for all.
The John Wesley Community Health Institute is a private clinic located in Los Angeles’s Skid Row. Its mission is to provide necessary services like healthcare to those experiencing homelessness. They’ve begun looking at the arts as a form of therapy: In 2014, teaching artist Leeav Sofer teamed up with the Wesley Clinic’s community outreach director Christopher Mack and music therapist Kate Richards Geller to create the Urban Voices Project, or UVP, a choir made up of Skid Row residents.
