“The Head and the Load”

July 11 - July 15

South African artist William Kentridge has teamed up with a host of collaborators to create a multidisciplinary tour-de-force, combining music, dance, mechanized sculptures, film and shadow play. “The Head and the Load” tells the story of the hundreds of thousands of African porters and carriers who served in British, French and German forces during World War I.

21CM Takeaway: William Kentridge’s many collaborators include Grammy-nominated orchestra collective The Knights and South African composer Philip Miller, as well as a host of South African singers, dancers and performers. With the goal of diving into an overlooked part of history, this production aims to engage audiences intellectually and aesthetically.
