Design Your Future

When my daughter was applying for music school, a friend gave her a bit of great advice: “College isn’t about fulfilling your dreams, but finding them.” And this search is more than pointing your compass at a spot on the map: You get to build the ship you set sail on. But it’s a daunting task. How do we design our own future?

We explore this question in this month’s issue. In “Design Thinking for Musicians,” Deanna Badizadegan shows us how her two passions – playing viola and finding creative solutions – complement each other in and out of musical realms. She brings us along for the ride with two new exercises to help readers reconnect with their curiosity and creativity.

Tim Munro examines the anguish and impetus for leaving Grammy-winning ensemble Eighth Blackbird in pursuit his own artistic voice. For Munro, this painful departure was a necessary step in reconnecting with his own curiosities about how he might tilt the axis of the musical world.

We are also excited to present the first in a series of interviews that challenge guests to reflect on a work or musician that helped shape their own musical identity – and re-imagine it through their own artistic lens. re/CREATE is hosted by Joe Brent, and this month’s guest is multi-instrumentalist and folk-rock singer Erin McKeown.

Lastly, we announce the winners of our “Doing Good” competition, a partnership launched between 21CM and Kendall Hunt Publishing Company to share the stories of young musicians who are reshaping the future of their communities through music.

Thanks for joining the conversation,
