Heading out the door to a gig, musicians typically run down the list of what’s needed for the night. Instrument, music, directions – check. We know that we do what we do because we love it, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. We need to carry one more thing with us: our tenacity, because wherever we go our art is sure to challenge us physically, mentally and emotionally.
This month, we explore stories of musicians navigating difficult situations. Andrew Schulman shares his personal journey from flatlining on a hospital gurney to embarking on a quest to heal others. In doing so, he has carved out a new niche for himself and possibly for the whole musical profession.
Deanna Badizadegan examines musicians’ collaborative spirit and grit through a design thinking lens in the second installment of “Design Thinking for Musicians.” In detangling these essential artistic mindsets, we gain the opportunity to strengthen them across our professional lives.
Then, Joe Brent addresses the challenges of working within unfamiliar musical mediums, namely, electronic music. Additionally, he sits down with four-time Grammy-nominated pianist Gerald Clayton in this month’s edition of re/CREATE, talking influences and early loves as Clayton reimagines D’Angelo’s “One Mo’ Gin.”
Get tough. Get going. And as always, thanks for joining the conversation,

From Code Blue to Medical Musician
After a brush with death, it was music that sparked my will to live and reversed my terminal condition. When I recovered, I knew I had to give back.
re/CREATE: Gerald Clayton Reimagines D’Angelo
re/CREATE celebrates musicians paying homage to the traditions they love while creating music from the heart. In this episode, we feature four-time Grammy-nominated musician Gerald Clayton.
