Behind The Rules: A Glimpse into Egypt’s Avant-Garde

When musicians Bahaa Al-Ansari and Paweł Kuz´ma met at a party, they discovered they both shared a love for free improvisation. After Kuz´ma, a classical guitarist from Poland, and Al-Ansari, an Egyptian pianist and composer, played together a few times, they decided to expand their forces by gathering seven more musicians to create what is now Cairo Impro, an improvisatory avant-garde ensemble with a goal to inspire listeners with strange, abstract, audience-involved performances. Cairo-based filmmaker Frank Bartscheck brings us this glimpse into their mission.
