Education, Continued

National Sawdust’s co-founder and artistic director Paola Prestini often refers to the organization as her “school-beyond-school,” a place that allows her to keep learning and exploring new ideas. In so doing, she touches on a part of the artistic life that rings true for many musicians. We may approach our work with the hope of eventual mastery, but we never expect to stop learning – nor would we want to.

This month, we bring you stories of musicians who believe that growth and continual discovery are integral to the creative process.

In collaboration with Four/Ten Media, we’re launching a new series of making-of videos that document the artistic transformations that come about through collaboration. This month, we peek behind the scenes into the making of music videos for Projeto Arcomusical, a sextet of musicians dedicated to the Afro-Brazilian berimbau.

21CM managing editor Elizabeth Nonemaker sits down with composer and National Sawdust co-founder Paola Prestini to discuss creative and administrative balance, the role of music journalists in helping audiences discover beauty and the process of adapting Kate DiCamillo’s book “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane” into an opera.

Part two of our series “Who’s Leading the Leaders?” continues with insights from Dr. Heather Landes, Dr. Michael Stepniak and Dr. Joyce Griggs about the role that educational institutions play in transforming our musical landscape.

Harlem Quartet violinist Melissa White joins us as our POP Picks curator, and Sylvia Yang launches the next round of 21CM Connect: Book Club. Join us as we read Dana Fontenau’s “It’s Not (JUST) About the Gig.”

Thanks for joining the conversation, and for helping us to learn alongside you.
