I originally found out about The Industry, a truly amazing experimental opera company here in Los Angeles, through my friend Elizabeth Cline, who is the executive director. I think it’s phenomenal how The Industry has re-approached an art form that has gotten extremely classicized (and perhaps marginalized), and I think the company is unbelievably successful at transforming how people view opera.

The latest collaborative venture between new music luminaries eighth blackbird (8bb) and Sleeping Giant (a collective of six young Brooklyn-based composers) grew out of 8bb’s residency at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art. This project is a fresh way to react to the oft-cited stimuli of visual art as an impetus for composition.
Educator Diane Downs believes that everyone can improvise and be a creative musician. With that philosophy, she founded The Louisville Leopard Percussionists, a performing ensemble of young musicians, ages 7–14, who learn to play mallet instruments and drum sets entirely by ear.
